RECENT NEWS


As a complement to my research on self-help housing, I will be working with computational designer and cartographer Carsten Rodin to map a  late 20th-century architectural and urban development schemes that sought to activate the agency of residents to help solve their own housing challenges. This work is made possible by an Independent Project Grant from the New York State Council on the Arts


In February of 2024, I had the pleasure of visiting UMass Amherst and deliver a talk for the Zube Lecture Series of the Department of Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning.

In March of 2023, I was delighted to share some work with students at the School of Public Architecture at Kean University during their spring lecture series.

I’m proud to serve as the inaugural Critic-in-residence in architecture for Places, a journal of public scholarship on architecture, landscape, and urbanism, where I will publish a quartet of essays on urban design and housing justice.
 
In June of 2021, I had the great privilege to give a talk at CUNY’s School of Labor and Urban Studies, “Storytelling for Citymaking.” 

In April of 2021, I had the honor of delivering a guest lecture, “Narrative Strategy for Urban Design Practice” to the Amsterdam Academy of Architecture

In March of 2021, I organized “Narrative Change for the Green New Deal,” the 6th Annual Urban Design Storytelling Symposium at Columbia, for which I convened an interdisciplinary group of change agents — activists, artists, architects, and authors — whose work demonstrates that narrative change is essential to policy change

In February of 2021, I delivered a guest lecture to the seminar “Shaping the Future of New York City” at Maccaulay Honors College, City University of New York 

I wrote an article about Istanbul, my favorite city in the world, for the excellent magazine Stranger’s Guide. This issue dives into the cultures of the Mediterranean. Order your copy or subscribe here

In November of 2020, I presented a guest lecture about “Rural-Urban Connections” to an undergraduate seminar at American University

In October of 2020, I delivered a guest lecture entitled “Storytelling as Citymaking: Narrative Urbanism & Practical Urbanism” at the Kharkiv School of Architecture in Kharkiv, Ukraine

After my remote presentation —entitled “Citymaking, Storytelling, and Social Exclusion” — at the About a City symposium in Milan, the Fondazione Giangiacomo Feltrinelli published some excerpts in their excellent blog (in Italian)

In February of 2020, an artist residency at MacDowell allowed me to spend a few weeks working on the manuscript of “Self-Help Housing” 

In April of 2019, a fellowship from the Guggenheim Foundation supported research and fieldwork for “Self-Help Housing
